This work delves into the essence of the mind and soul, urging individuals to understand themselves as a means to comprehend their relationship with the divine. It outlines the mind's rational capabilities and its role as a governing substance over the body. The author discusses the duality of human nature, consisting of both soul and flesh, and elaborates on the powers of the soul, including rationality, appetitiveness, and irascibility. Furthermore, it compares the soul's virtues to angelic orders and highlights the soul's capacity for knowledge and love, ultimately pointing to the divine as the ultimate truth and source of existence.

PREFACE.

There are three great motives that urge us to humility. It becomes me as a creature, as a sinner, as a saint. The first we see in the heavenly hosts, in unfallen man, in Jesus as Son of Man. The second appeals to us in our fallen state, and points out the only way through which we can return to our right place as creatures. In the third we have the mystery of grace, which teaches us that, as we lose ourselves in the overwhelming greatness of redeeming love, humility becomes to us the consummation of everlasting blessedness and adoration.

In our ordinary religious teaching, the second aspect has been too exclusively put in the foreground, so that some have even gone to the extreme of saying that we must keep sinning if we are indeed to keep humble. Others again have thought that the strength of self-condemnation is the secret of humility. And the Christian life has suffered loss, where believers have not been distinctly guided to see that, even in our relation as creatures, nothing is more natural and beautiful and blessed than to be nothing, that God may be all; or where it has not been made clear that it is not sin that humbles most, but grace, and that it is the soul, led through its sinfulness to be occupied with God in His wonderful glory as God, as Creator and Redeemer, that will truly take the lowest place before Him.

In these meditations I have, for more than one reason, almost exclusively directed attention to the humility that becomes us as creatures. It is not only that the connection between humility and sin is so abundantly set forth in all our religious teaching, but because I believe that for the fullness of the Christian life it is indispensable that prominence be given to the other aspect. If Jesus is indeed to be our example in His lowliness, we need to understand the principles in which it was rooted, and in which we find the common ground on which we stand with Him, and in which our likeness to Him is to be attained. If we are indeed to be humble, not only before God but towards men, if humility is to be our joy, we must see that it is not only the mark of shame, because of sin, but, apart from all sin, a being clothed upon with the very beauty and blessedness of heaven and of Jesus. We shall see that just as Jesus found His glory in taking the form of a servant, so when He said to us, ‘Whosoever would be first among you, shall be your servant,’ He simply taught us the blessed truth that there is nothing so divine and heavenly as being the servant and helper of all. The faithful servant, who recognises his position, finds a real pleasure in supplying the wants of the master or his guests. When we see that humility is something infinitely deeper than contrition, and accept it as our participation in the life of Jesus, we shall begin to learn that it is our true nobility, and that to prove it in being servants of all is the highest fulfilment of our destiny, as men created in the image of God.

When I look back upon my own religious experience, or round upon the Church of Christ in the world, I stand amazed at the thought of how little humility is sought after as the distinguishing feature of the discipleship of Jesus. In preaching and living, in the daily intercourse of the home and social life, in the more special fellowship with Christians, in the direction and performance of work for Christ,ーalas! how much proof there is that humility is not esteemed the cardinal virtue, the only root from which the graces can grow, the one indispensable condition of true fellowship with Jesus. That it should have been possible for men to say of those who claim to be seeking the higher holiness, that the profession has not been accompanied with increasing humility, is a loud call to all earnest Christians, however much or little truth there be in the charge, to prove that meekness and lowliness of heart are the chief mark by which they who follow the meek and lowly Lamb of God are to be known.

Almost every historian has set out by regretting how little is known of the early inhabitants of Great Britain - a fact which only the lovers of hoar antiquity deplore, since from all we can with certainty glean from the pages of contemporary history, we should find but little more to interest us than if we possessed written records of the remotest origin of the Red Indians; for both would alike but be the history of an unlettered and uncivilized race. The same dim obscurity, with scarcely an exception, hangs over the primeval inhabitants of every other country; and if we lift up the mysterious curtain which has so long fallen over and concealed the past, we only obtain glimpses of obscure hieroglyphics; and from the unmeaning fables of monsters and giants, to which the rudest nations trace their origin, we but glance backward and backward, to find that civilized Rome and classic Greece can produce no better authorities than old undated traditions, teeming with fabulous accounts of heathen gods and goddesses.

A review and analysis of the book Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly, Martin Dugard.

Sample: Is Killing Jesus the Bible According to Bill O'Reilly?

Using the four Gospels of the Bible as source material for his new historical thriller “Killing Jesus,” Bill O'Reilly has managed to stir up controversy once again. Instead of utilizing the source materials in an “as-is” fashion, O'Reilly decided to leave parts of the Gospel story out that he believes didn't happen the way the Bible documents it.

In order to reach a certain level of popularity today, you've got to be controversial or unique in some way. For Bill O'Reilly, he accomplishes this by taking a truth that everyone is familiar with or has faith in, whether politically or religiously, and then puts his own spin on what has happened to offer his own perspective.

As an example of this in his new book, O'Reilly talks about how the crucifixion, in his opinion, would have made it impossible to speak. “People died on a cross because of suffocation,” O'Reilly said in a recent interview about his book. “Even if Jesus had said 'Father, please forgive them for they don't know what they do,' nobody would have been able to hear him speak.”

That's what readers are in store for when they pick up O'Reilly's new book. One thing is for certain: if you love Bill O'Reilly and his unique perspective, then you'll likely love this book. If you don't enjoy what O'Reilly has to say, “Killing Jesus” will give you more fuel for your dissatisfaction.

Weapon Evolution explores the development of weaponry and its profound impact on warfare, military strategy, and human society. Delving into millennia of innovation, the book traces the progression from rudimentary tools to today’s sophisticated nuclear arsenals. It highlights how advancements in weapon technology have consistently redefined military tactics and reshaped geopolitical dynamics.

For instance, the rise of projectile weapons like the bow and arrow necessitated new combat strategies, while the advent of gunpowder revolutionized warfare, altering the balance of power globally. The book examines the interplay between technological progress, military doctrine, and broader societal impacts, including economic and ethical considerations.

By providing historical context and analyzing the social, economic, and political conditions that fostered weapon innovation, Weapon Evolution argues that weapon development is not merely a linear progression but a complex process shaped by human ingenuity, strategic imperatives, and societal values.

Structured chronologically, the book progresses through distinct historical periods, from prehistoric tools to the nuclear age, culminating in a discussion of emerging trends like autonomous weapons and cyber warfare, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of weapon evolution and its implications.
