In the West we have all but forgotten the Christians in the Middle East. This tender elegy paints the land of Jesus in new light. Taybeh's deep-rooted faith illuminates these stories of saints, olive trees, and the echos of war. Taybeh is a small village about 25 miles north of Jerusalem not far from Ramallah and with a beautiful view over the desert, the Jordan valley and the Dead Sea. The gospel of John says Jesus went to Taybeh -then called Ephraim- after he raised Lazarus to life and the Jewish authorities planned to put Jesus to death. Living amidst Muslim villages , Israeli settlements and military roadblocks, Taybeh's inhabitants are intensely proud of their Christian heritage. But Taybeh is to be the last Christian village of the Holy Land, its people mostly forgotten, even by most of their Christian brothers and sisters around the world. These expertly and lovingly created chronicles of Christian life in Taybeh remind us of the intensity of faith and the tragedy of destruction that are both present today, precisely where Jesus walked the earth. Every Christian would do well to read this exceptional book which received the prestigious Prix litt?raire d’Oeuvre d’Orient.

Annette Baier’s aim is to make sense of David Hume’s Treatise as a whole. Hume’s family motto, which appears on his bookplate, was “True to the End.” Baier argues that it is not until the end of the Treatise that we get his full story about “truth and falsehood, reason and folly.” By the end, we can see the cause to which Hume has been true throughout the work.Baier finds Hume’s Treatise on Human Nature to be a carefully crafted literary and philosophical work which itself displays a philosophical progress of sentiments. His starting place is an overly abstract intellectualism that deliberately thrusts passions and social concerns into the background. In the three interrelated books of the Treatise, his “self-understander” proceeds through partial successes and dramatic failures to emerge with new-found optimism, expecting that the “exact knowledge” the morally self-conscious anatomist of human nature can acquire will itself improve and correct our vision of morality. Baier describes how, by turning philosophy toward human nature instead of toward God and the universe, Hume initiated a new philosophy, a broader discipline of reflection that can embrace Charles Darwin and Michel Foucault as well as William James and Sigmund Freud. Hume belongs both to our present and to our past.

M.

Freedom of the Will provides a novel interpretation of G. E. Moore’s famous conditional analysis of free will and discusses several questions about the meaning of free will and its significance for moral responsibility. Although Moore’ theory has a strong initial appeal, most metaphysicians believe that there are conclusive arguments against it. Huoranszki argues that the importance of conditional analysis must be reevaluated in light of some recent developments in the theory of dispositions.

The original analysis can be amended so that the revised conditional account is not only a good response to determinist worries about the possibility of free will, but it can also explain the sense in which free will is an important condition of moral responsibility. This study addresses three fundamental issues about free will as a metaphysical condition of responsibility. First, the book explains why agents are responsible for their actions or omissions only if they have the ability to do otherwise and shows that the relevant ability is best captured by the revised conditional analysis. Second, it aims to clarify the relation between agents’ free will and their rational capacities. It argues that free will as a condition of responsibility must be understood in terms of agents’ ability to do otherwise rather than in terms of their capacity to respond to reasons. Finally, the book explains in which sense responsibility requires self-determination and argues that it is compatible with agents’ limited capacity to control their own character, reasons, and motives.

You are all free and you are all responsible.

Holy Quran

Sufism challenges humanity to review ourselves and our motives. Are we acting in ego for our own selfish benefit? Or are we acting for the good of our communitylocally and globally? Have we seriously considered the long-term effects of our decisions, and if so, are we capable of accepting those consequences? Are you truly grateful for what you have, or are you childishly dissatisfied with everything? What is the content of your heart?

Sufism not only puts the question to you but demands that you answer with sincerity, and once you have your heartfelt answer, accept that you are truly responsible.

Sufism directs Darvishes to control their instincts and senses wisely using the knowledge held in their mind; the mind controlled and guided by the love radiated from their innocent and wise heart, the heart that is the temple of love, home for sincerity and place for corrections.

Whatever faith you may follow, whatever name you have for God, Sufism does not ask that you abandon your existing personal relationship with Our Creator and follow a different path. Sufism asks that you be authentic, sincere, and honest with yourself. It is in living with heartfelt sincerity and integrity that your actions and interactions with Creation fill your heart with love, peace and an enduring sense of contentment.

Are you ready to take this journey?
