DVS Mindz The Twenty-Year Saga of the Greatest Rap Group to Almost Make It Outta Kansas【電子書籍】[ Geoff Harkness ]

99.9% of aspiring rappers never make it in the music industry. So why do we only hear the stories of the ones who do?

DVS Mindz might be the greatest rap group you’ve never heard of. Formed in Topeka, Kansas, in the mid-1990s, they developed a reputation for ferocious rhyming and frenetic live performances. In their heyday, DVS Mindz released a critically acclaimed CD, received nominations for prestigious awards, and opened for legends such as Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC, and De La Soul as well as KC icon Tech N9ne. But the group struggled with creative differences, substance abuse, ego battles, and money issues, and they split up in 2003.

Geoff Harkness takes readers on a unique two-decade journey alongside the members of DVS Mindz, chronicling their childhoods, their brush with success, and what became of them in the years that followed. Based on more than one hundred hours of video and audio recordings from 1999 to 2022, this fly-on-the-wall account offers a backstage pass into the recording studios and radio stations, video shoots and house parties, nightclubs and concert halls of the Kansas City-Lawrence-Topeka music scene circa 2000.

DVS Mindz is at once a compulsively readable group biography of four talented MCs, a vibrant voyage through the forgotten history of local hip hop, and a breathtakingly real story of struggling to achieve big dreams.

'The Turn of the Screw' von Henry James: Ein Vergleich der short fiction prose von Henry Jamesmit ihrer Verfilmung 'The Innocents' von Jack Clayton【電子書籍】[ Martin Liboska ](3)

Su ci? che viene chiamato ≪arte≫ L’arte vista da Tolst?j【電子書籍】[ Lev Tolst?j ](3)

(No) I am (not) okay【電子書籍】[ Dre Hill ](3)

No can see the world that exists inside one's head. Sometimes you might wish you could close your eyes and never wake, drifting off peacefully into an eternal slumber. (No) I am (not) okay is Dre Hill's exploration into this hidden inner world and what happens within. This chapbook centers its dialogue on suicide and ideations, mental health, along with commentary on religion, race, and gender, and how these structures further cloud the waters of the mind. Here, Hill reckons with the weight of the war waged in one's own mind. (No) I am (not) okay is raw, unashamed, and unafraid, willing to say things that many think but feel they could never articulate.

This anthology features six plays by celebrated Chicago playwright Mickle Maher, who has been described by the Houston Chronicle as “one of the most original voices in American theater today,” and by the Chicago Reader as “a master at creating complex, paradoxical works that encompass their own contradictions.” Maher’s plays engage classic literature as a jumping off point for seriously unusual comedic dramas, often dealing with the absurdity, difficulties, and rewards of artistic endeavor. His work has been influenced by or compared to Eug?ne Ionesco, Maria Irene Fornes, Kenneth Koch, and Edward Albee, among others. This edition is designed to be useful for schools and other organizations that wish to mount productions of Maher’s plays, which generally feature small casts and simple scenery and stagings, and thus can be easy to produce.

The anthology includes:

An Apology for the Course and Outcome of Certain Events Delivered by Doctor John Faustus on This His Final Evening
On the night Faustus concludes his bargain with Mephistopheles, he apologizes to a group of random people for his failure to keep a diary of his fabulous life.

The Hunchback Variations
Ludwig von Beethoven and Quasimodo present a panel discussion on their failure to create an impossible sound called for in a stage direction in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard.

Song About Himself
In a dystopian future, a woman made extraordinary by her ability to speak relatively clearly tries to connect with others on a mysterious social media site created by a rogue artificial intelligence.

There Is a Happiness That Morning Is
Having engaged the evening before in a highly inappropriate display of public affection on the main lawn of their rural New England campus, two lecturers on the poems of William Blake must now, in class, either apologize for their behavior or effectively justify it to keep their jobs.

It Is Magic
Deb and Sandy are auditioning Tim for the role of the Wolf in a production of The Three Little Pigs, but there’s a mysterious haze in the basement of the Mortier Civic Playhouse and that, in addition to interruptions from the director of the Scottish play that’s going on upstairs, is making things difficult. Then, Liz shows up and throws the whole room into (further) chaos. It Is Magic reveals the deep, ancient evil at the heart of the community theater audition process.

Spirits to Enforce
Twelve telefundraisers with secret identities work to raise money for a superheroic production of The Tempest in a bid to save Fathomtown from Professor Cannibal and his band of evil doers.

Creature is a complex poetics of vitality, and it immaculately cleaves: even as it underscores how living in an inherently inhospitable environment will dispossess us of the world and one another, making animal of man, it sutures the rent evolutionary tree, glorifying the interdependence of each extant thing. Michael Dumanis expertly cultivates the multiplicity of language and makes of “creature” a marvelous contronym; we are a creature as in a beast, debased, beholden to nature, and we are creature as in an extension of creation, improbably sentient, mortal, here. In “Autobiography,” the speaker attests to the contradiction at the root of cognizance: “Am, as an animal, anxious. Appendages always aflutter, / am an amazing accident: alive.” How does the human mammal embody both and neither ー communal and itinerant, leaving home to approach it, as an immigrant and a geographic nomad, as someone’s child and another’s parent, as being and thing? How do we negotiate our ouroboric identities while attuned to not just our own fragility, but an impending global extinction event? The answer is the absence of answer. “In the beginning, I thought a great deal / about death and sunlight, et cetera,” Dumanis admits in “Squalor,” but “The Double Dream of Spring” absolves us of outsmarting impermanence. “O what a ball I had, spending the days.” And what should we do in this vernal brevity but exhaust it? We each only have so long to trace our hand “over the stony bones / that, fused together, hold [our] only face.”
Freedom Is Not Enough T. S. Eliot for Liberation, Resistance, and Hope【電子書籍】[ Patrick R. Query ](3)

Shows the surprising ways T. S. Eliot's work sheds light onーand proves useful toーthe contemporary struggle for a freer and more just world.

How does literature from the past speak to the present? What can we, as readers committed to combatting oppression, learn from figures whose writing we love but some of whose beliefs we may oppose? Quite a lot, according to Patrick R. Query. To make this case, Query turns to a writer and critic as canonical as he is controversial-T. S. Eliot. Passionately argued and eminently readable, Freedom Is Not Enough shows how Eliot makes a surprising yet vital ally in the struggle to fill the world with more freedom, equality, and human dignity. Without ignoring or downplaying the bigotry and elitism that are ineluctable parts of Eliot's legacy, Query argues that we need today what Eliot has to teach us: about migration, peace, friendship, radicalism, anti-fascism, liberation, resistance, and hope. Drawing on the full scope of Eliot's oeuvre-from his most well-known poetry and prose to newly available archival materials-Freedom Is Not Enough demonstrates how to use Eliot and literature more broadly to confront the forces conspiring to turn our world into a waste land.
