May Sarton presents a collection of socially charged yet universal poems

One of the many gems of this volume is “The Invocation to Kali,” which explores a dark and destructive femininity. Sarton writes of “Crude power that forges a balance / Between hate and love,” finding an amalgam of dark and light within a single act. This graceful and nuanced work forges powerful connections between timeless ideas and specific moments in history.

A photographer on assignment in Guatemala. A doctor meeting a cancer survivor in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. A woman facing down her unexpected pregnancy at a bluegrass festival in North Carolina. A draft resister arriving in Canada during the Vietnam War.

In these short stories by award-winning Canadian writer Lesley Krueger, we meet people at a crossroad in their lives. Travel has taken them away from their roots, stripping away the protections of daily life. Now they must confront decisions they’ve been avoiding.

Seven stories, seven life-changing decisions.

Newly published in electronic format, Hard Travel has been praised by the Globe and Mail of Toronto for its “subtle, deft strokes,” by the Winnipeg Free Press for its “human appeal,” and by the Vancouver Sun for its “most vivid and original imagery.”

“Hard Travel is a book about change,” according to the Sun, “shifts in the axis of understanding that alter perception irrevocably. Each story builds to a crystalline moment of realization that heralds a new phase of life. Krueger does not judge the value of these changes, she observes and interprets.”

Hard Travel is Lesley Krueger’s first published book. Her fifth novel, Time Squared, is due out in September, 2021.

What draws a person to the political life? In Call Me Giambattista, John Ciaccia recounts his immigration to Canada from Italy as a small child in 1937 to his retirement from the National Assembly of Quebec in 1998. After studying at McGill University's Faculty of Law, practising in a Montreal law firm, and shifting gears to work as a federal civil servant, a phone call in 1973 from Premier Robert Bourassa launched Ciaccia's twenty-five-year career in Quebec politics. As a member federalist politician from an Italian background, Ciaccia faced many challenges. When first elected, he negotiated the James Bay Agreement with the Cree and the Inuit, and later, as Quebec's minister of Native Affairs, he was a key negotiator in the Oka crisis of 1990. Over the course of his career he held four cabinet posts, including International Affairs, and he ended his political career as the longest-serving member of the National Assembly. Ciaccia details all of these events and more, and explains his relationships with leading figures such as Robert Bourassa, Claude Ryan, Pierre Trudeau, Ren? L?vesque, and Jacques Parizeau. Revealing his approach to politics, Ciaccia describes the lessons he learned from his career, and underscores the importance of acting according to one's convictions. An intriguing memoir of an Italian immigrant who came to hold key roles in the Quebec government, Call Me Giambattista tells the story of a political leader and the choices he made during a seminal period in Quebec history.

Rose Pereira is drifting through life when she’s first introduced to Stare at the Sun, an up-and-coming indie band led by the puppy-eyed Harley. The energetic group pulls her in, and she finds herself living for the first time in ages. Especially when she meets a friend of the band, Max, a trans guy.

With his bizarre sense of humor, his gorgeous arms, and the way he talks about music, Max is a danger to her don’t-care attitude. He’s her best friend, in her corner no matter what, he makes her laugh, and he gets her.

Even when she screws everything up, Max is on her side. Pregnant with Harley’s baby, she absolutely can’t be in love with Max.

Rose is not in love. Because if you don’t fall in love, then you can’t get broken.

Polished is a collection of poems born from more than thirty years of exploring and wandering the wild trails and rivers of the Colorado Plateau. Collectively, the poems paint an exuberant, image-rich story of a curious, observant young man seeking moments of wonder and beauty in his wild backyard.
J. Arbuthnot Wilson (pseudonym of the real author, Grant Allen) tells this short story of his strange night spent inside "the great unopened Pyramid of Abu Yilla" in Egypt. On New Year's Eve, on the night before his group was to take a guided tour and climb the still sealed pyramid, he set out on his own to walk around the pyramid to relieve his boredom. He happened to find the secret entrance stone, which he pushed open. What he experienced deep inside the pyramid was a once-in-a-thousand-years event.

"Never as long as I live shall I forget the ecstasy of terror, astonishment, and blank dismay which seized upon me when I stepped into that seemingly enchanted chamber. ... I gazed fixedly at the strange picture before me, taking in all its details in a confused way, yet quite incapable of understanding or realizing any part of its true import."

A monumental work, expansive in scope, covering the life, times, and culture of that most famous of the Wobbliesーsongwriter, poet, hobo, thinker, humorist, martyrーJoe Hill. It is a journey into the Wobbly culture that made Hill and the capitalist culture that killed him. Many aspects of the life and lore of Joe Hill receive their first and only discussion in IWW historian Franklin Rosemont’s opus.

In great detail, the issues that Joe Hill raised and grappled with in his life: capitalism, white supremacy, gender, religion, wilderness, law, prison, and industrial unionism are shown in both the context of Hill’s life and for their enduring relevance in the century since his death.

Collected too is Joe Hill’s art, plus scores of other images featuring Hill-inspired art by IWW illustrators from Ralph Chaplin to Carlos Cortez, as well as contributions from many other labor artists.

As Rosemont suggests in this remarkable book, Joe Hill never really died. He lives in the minds of young (and old) rebels as long as his songs are sung, his ideas are circulated, and his political descendants keep fighting for a better day.
