An introductory note seems called for to explain to the reader the origin of the following strange document, which I have received from a friend with a view to publication. The author has given it the form of a letter to myself, and he signs himself with his nickname, "Cass," which is an abbreviation of Cassandra. I have seldom met Cass since we were undergraduates together at Oxford before the war of 1914. Even in those days he was addicted to lurid forebodings, hence his nickname.
My last meeting with him was in one of the great London blitzes of 1941, when he reminded me that he had long ago prophesied the end of civilization in world-wide fire. The Battle of London, he affirmed, was the beginning of the long-drawn-out disaster.

Cass will not, I am sure, mind my saying that he always seemed to us a bit crazy: but he certainly had a queer knack of prophesy, and though we thought him sometimes curiously unable to understand the springs of his own behaviour, he had a remarkable gift of insight into the minds of others. This enabled him to help some of us to straighten out our tangles, and I for one owe him a debt of deep gratitude. He saw me heading for a most disastrous love affair, and by magic (no other word seems adequate) he opened my eyes to the folly of it. It is for this reason that I feel bound to carry out his request to publish the following statement. I cannot myself vouch for its truth. Cass knows very well that I am an inveterate sceptic about all his fantastic ideas. It was on this account that he invented my nickname. "Thos," which most of my Oxford friends adopted. "Thos," of course, is an abbreviation for Thomas, and refers to the "doubting Thomas" of the New Testament.

Cass, I feel confident, is sufficiently detached and sane to realize that what is veridical for him may be sheer extravagance for others, who have no direct experience by which to judge his claims. But if I refrain from believing, I also refrain from disbelieving. Too often in the past I have known his wild prophesies come true.

The head of the following bulky letter bears the address of a well-known mental home.

"THOS."

History Encounters unearths the greatest stories with the major events from the Battle of Verdun to expand reader horizons for readers to be best informed.

The Battle of Verdun was planned by German General Erich von Falkenhayn, who wanted to weaken the French army by causing heavy casualties. He believed that the British army, combined with the French army, could severely impact the outcome of the war. The other allies of the British were the Italian and the Russian armies. By then Russia had already been immobilized, and Italy was unlikely to cause any serious threat to the Central powers. That left out France and eliminating the French army would create an advantage for the Germans. Through the battle at Verdun, Falkenhayn wanted to "bleed France white."

The Battle of Verdun became a symbol of the horrors of trench warfare and the destructiveness of war. It brought the armies of both sides to the brink of collapse. Several French villages were completely destroyed and remain uninhabitable to this date.

Learning about history will keep you perceptive and make sure to not repeat mistakes that others made in the past. The different stories in this series will show the readers that history should not just be seen from one perspective, but from the different eyes of the groups of people involved. You never know, you might finally understand their choices, their actions, and their reactions.

In this historical series, you will discover:

The history of different countries and cultures

The inner workings of major historical turning points in different countries.

Different perspectives of major events in history

The reasons behind different wars or battles throughout history

These historical series are for anyone who wants to learn fun, exciting and influential facts of what happened years before their time.
Guarding Gable starts with an actual event in the life of the screen's number one star and becomes a story worthy of a Hollywood movie.

It's 1942 and World War Two is just beginning. Beloved actress Carole Lombard is killed in a plane crash while returning from a bond-selling tour and her devoted husband, Clark Gable, is beyond consolation. Depressed to the point of suicide, he enlists in the U.S. Army Air Corps, telling his bosses at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that he doesn't care if he ever comes back.

Naturally, MGM is apoplectic at the prospect of losing their top box office attraction. In desperation, studio head Louis B.Mayer leans on a lowly publicist, Alan Greenberg, to enlist with Gable with orders to keep him alive during World War Two. That's hard to do when Gable insists on flying combat missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. Not only that, he and Alan fall in love with the same woman -- and, if you're Alan, how do you win the girl if your competition is Clark Gable, the "King" of Hollywood?

Guarding Gable is a story of love, war, and humor. It also has a little rough language but, after all, this is the Army.

This title is also available as an enhanced audiobook for download from Bear Manor Audio and on CD from Blackstone Audio.

Nat Segaloff covered the motion picture business for the Boston Herald, CBS Radio, and Group W. He has also been a studio publicist, college teacher, playwright, and author. In 1996 he formed the multimedia production company Alien Voices with actors Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie and produced five bestselling, fully dramatized audio plays.
