Which side of the barbed wire prison fences are the bad guys? Likewise, on the outside of those fences who are the good guys? This is an insightful true story of how a rag-tag minimum security prison slow pitch softball team in the Blue Ridge Mountains entered into a small city softball league as an experiment into integrating inmates back into the community and how these unseemly men persevered, triumphed and won the respect and acceptance of the whole community: always remembering: “…There is none righteous, no, not one:” (Romans 3:10).

In tenth-century Europe and particularly in Germany, imperial women were able to wield power in ways that were scarcely imaginable in earlier centuries. Theophanu and Adelheid were two of the most influential figures in the Ottonian reich along with their husbands, who relied heavily on their support. Phyllis G. Jestice examines an array of factors that produced their power and prestige, including societal attitudes toward women, their wealth, their unction as queens, and their carefully constructed image of piety. Due to their influential positions, Theophanu and Adelheid reclaimed control of the young Otto III despite fierce opposition from Henry the Quarrelsome during the throne struggle of 984. In examining how they successfully secured the regency, this book confronts the outmoded notion of exceptionalism and illuminates the lives of powerful Ottonian women.

Hubris and Concern

Could Distributed Ledger Technology Replace Modern States?

Bitcoin, Venezuela's Petro and Facebook's Libra. Accused of enabling drug dealing, circumventing sanctions and undermining monetary policy, cryptocurrencies make headlines. Tech enthusiasts even predict a future entirely governed by cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT). Meanwhile, lawmakers call Mark Zuckerberg to testify before Congress, the EU prohibits Facebook's Libra until its implications are researched and China bans cryptocurrencies altogether.

An unsettling question arises: Are Distributed Ledger Technologies capable of replacing modern states?

Yet let us take a step back: What are Distributed Ledger Technologies? And what are states? In fact, the answer to the question titling this book crucially hinges on how we define these two. In fact, neither DLT nor states are predetermined entities, but social and material realities that emerge from a continuous struggle of definitions. Hence, this book starts by studying the becoming of DLT and states as realities.

Underlying this quest is a reading of Martin Heidegger's Being and Time and a reinterpretation of postmodern thought through a series of drawings of carts. Taken together, they constitute the Theory of Carts. A cart hereby illustrates how entities are discursively materialized through a range of disciplinary techniques as realities, such as identities, norms or truths. These techniques are, to be precise, concealing, abstracting, including/excluding and obscuring mediation and are widely employed in mass-consumed media.

In the case of DLT, the named techniques effectively discipline anarchist significations to such an extent that the (re)production of Distributed Ledger Technologies ensures the continuity of modern states. However, the actual richness and depth of Hubris and Concern lies in its look behind the curtain of ostensible answers, in its probing of conventional beliefs about what is real and declared to be true. And by doing so, this book invites us to a unique philosophical journey to the place where today's truths are made.

In What Have the Greeks Done for Modern Civilisation?, J. P. Mahaffy explores the profound influence of ancient Greek culture on modern Western civilization. Through this work, Mahaffy seeks to answer the question posed by the title, examining the intellectual, artistic, and political contributions of the Greeks that continue to shape contemporary society. The book serves as both a reflection on ancient Greece's achievements and a defense of its enduring relevance in the modern world.Mahaffy argues that Greek contributions, especially in philosophy, science, art, and politics, laid the foundations for much of Western thought. He discusses the role of Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, whose ideas continue to inform contemporary philosophy, ethics, and logic. The influence of Greek literature, drama, and art is also a central theme, with Mahaffy examining the timeless works of playwrights like Sophocles and the enduring beauty of Greek sculpture and architecture. Additionally, he emphasizes the political innovations of the Greeks, particularly in the creation of democracy in Athens, which has shaped modern notions of governance and civic participation.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, , course: WER Prize 2004, language: English, abstract: The debate on movement of people (migration) ranges, 10 days after the probably most important historical moment of European history in the 21st century, from positive to pessimistic. Migration undoubtedly presented a excellent opportunity for advancing human welfare, but some clashes resulting from economical, historical or political failures made weighing its costs and benefits very difficult: effects that look like 'benefits' from a liberal economic point of view became 'costs' when viewed from politics and with emotion in mind. First, the author will focus on major economic and political questions and perspectives that are currently clashing eachother in public debates.2 In fact the current debate on European Enlargement started already a couple of decades ago when people and populations moved throughout Europe from South-East Europe and Northern Africa to wealthy countries, such as Germany, France, UK or Scandinavia.3 Today, critics of EU enlargement mainly focus their arguments on the changes, problems and things that went wrong through immigration or due to false migration policy. 4 [...] 2 Should Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, or even Ukraine join the European Union in the future ? What is going to happen to people outside the European Union + other CEE that will look for job opportunities in our host countries ? 3 - With the result that some immigrants did not find a job, did not actively integrate themselves into their new local community or did not get integrated due to many reasons. 4 - Nevertheless debates about jobmarket problems resulting from (current and future) European Enlargement should not mixed up with integration problems resulting with immigrants from Non - EU countries.

A provocative reinterpretation of Civil War?era diplomacy

Click here to read a review from The British Scholar

“Phillip E. Myers’s Caution and Cooperation places Anglo-American relations during the Civil War within the broader context of the whole nineteenth century, arguing convincingly for the lack of any real chance of British intervention on the side of the Confederacy and dating the end-of-the-century Anglo-American rapprochement back about three decades. Based on extensive research in the United States and Great Britain, this major reinterpretation of the transatlantic special relationship is ‘international history’ in its truest sense.”

ーMary Ann Heiss, Editor, New Studies in U.S. Foreign Relations Series

It has long been a mainstay in historical literature that the Civil War had a deleterious effect on Anglo-American relations and that Britain came close to intervention in the conflict. Historians assert that it was only a combination of desperate diplomacy, the Confederacy’s military losses, and Lincoln’s timely issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation that kept the British on the sidelines. Phillip E. Myers seeks to revise this prevailing view by arguing instead that wartime relations between Britain and the United States were marked by caution rather than conflict.

Using a wide array of primary materials from both sides of the Atlantic, Myers traces the sources of potential Anglo-American wartime turmoil as well as the various reasons both sides had for avoiding war. And while he does note the disagreement between Washington and London, he convincingly demonstrates that transatlantic discord was ultimately minor and neither side seriously considered war against the other.

Myers further extends his study into the postwar period to see how that bond strengthened and grew, culminating with the Treaty of Washington in 1871. The Civil War was not, as many have believed for so long, an unpleasant interruption in British-American affairs; instead, it was an event that helped bring the two countries closer together to seal the friendship.

Soundly researched and cogently argued, Caution and Cooperation will surely prompt discussion among Civil War historians, foreign relations scholars, and readers of history.
