What binds societies together and how can these social orders be structured in a fair way? Jeffrey C. Alexander's masterful work, The Civil Sphere, addresses this central paradox of modern life. Feelings for others--the solidarity that is ignored or underplayed by theories of power or self-interest--are at the heart of this novel inquiry into the meeting place between normative theories of what we think we should do and empirical studies of who we actually are. Solidarity, Alexander demonstrates, creates inclusive and exclusive social structures and shows how they can be repaired. It is not perfect, it is not absolute, and the horrors which occur in its lapses have been seen all too frequently in the forms of discrimination, genocide, and war. Despite its worldly flaws and contradictions, however, solidarity and the project of civil society remain our best hope: the antidote to every divisive institution, every unfair distribution, every abusive and dominating hierarchy. This grand, sweeping statement and rigorous empirical investigation is a major contribution to our thinking about the real but ideal world in which we all reside.

The civil service provides the administrative infrastructure of western government. Its functions are central to any question of efficiency, the distribution of power in the state, the role of the state in society and the operation of democracy itself. When such issues transcend national boundaries a comparative perspective is invaluable.

This book provides the first comprehensive study of civil services in the West. Aimed at first year students and above, the book applies a common framework of analysis to the study of each country's political setting, historical background, political executive, structure, bureaucracy, control, accountability, management and policy-making. The book is a timely and comprehensive introduction to this vital but neglected area of study. Countries covered include: Britain, Ireland, Canada, France, Italy, Sweden, United States and West Germany.

If we look at the life of Moses, we find numerous spiritual lessons that will benefit any disciple of Jesus. Is his life important? Most assuredly, as this volume of work explores. He was a murderer, yet God used him mightily. He was almost killed as an infant, yet survived to do great things for God, leading a life of worth and value for 120 years. He survived the harshness of two wilderness journeys, totalling 80 years, and rightly takes his place, even though human, as one of the great heroes of the Bible. Moses as a prophet played a vital role in pointing towards the life and the ministry of Jesus. Moses is of great importance in the Bible for he is recognised as a deliverer (Exodus 3:7?10), covenant mediator (Exodus 34:27), priest (Psalm 99:6), and ruler (Exodus 2:13?14; Acts 7:27). Moses's larger-than-life status as prophet was designed by God as a template from which all other prophets would be measured. Enjoy this journey as covered in volumes one and two to know more about Moses, and how we can spiritually grow on our journey with God.

The Motor-Bus in War by A. M. Beatson is a fascinating account of the role that motor buses played during World War I. Written in the aftermath of the war, the book details how these vehicles, typically used for public transportation, were adapted for military purposes and proved invaluable on the front lines. Beatson, who had firsthand experience with these innovations, provides a detailed history of the motor-bus’s use in various wartime operations, particularly in transporting soldiers, supplies, and even wounded soldiers. The narrative explores the technical and logistical aspects of converting civilian buses for military service, highlighting the challenges and successes of using this relatively new form of transport in the harsh conditions of war. Motor buses were often employed to shuttle troops between bases, assist in evacuations, and deliver essential goods to areas that might otherwise have been inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure or the movement of enemy forces.

This book brings together social sciencists to create an interdisciplinary dialogue on the topic of social change as a cultural process. Culture is as much about novelty as it is about tradition, as much about change as it is about stability. This dynamic tension is analyzed in collective protests, intergroup dynamics, language, mass media, science, community participation, art, and social transitions to capitalism, among others contexts. These diverse cases illustrate a number of key factors that can propel, slow-down and retract social change. An emancipatory and integrative social science is developed in this book, which offers a new explanatory model of human behavior and thought under conditions of institutional and societal change.

An epic narrative of World War II naval action that brings to life the sailors and exploits of the war's most decorated destroyer squadron.

When Admiral William Halsey selected Destroyer Squadron 21 (Desron 21) to lead his victorious ships into Tokyo Bay to accept the Japanese surrender, it was the most battle-hardened US naval squadron of the war.

But it was not the squadron of ships that had accumulated such an inspiring resume; it was the people serving aboard them. Sailors, not metallic superstructures and hulls, had won the battles and become the stuff of legend. Men like Commander Donald MacDonald, skipper of the USS O'Bannon, who became the most decorated naval officer of the Pacific war; Lieutenant Hugh Barr Miller, who survived his ship's sinking and waged a one-man battle against the enemy while stranded on a Japanese-occupied island; and Doctor Dow "Doc" Ransom, the beloved physician of the USS La Vallette, who combined a mixture of humor and medical expertise to treat his patients at sea, epitomize the sacrifices made by all the men and women of World War II.

Through diaries, personal interviews with survivors, and letters written to and by the crews during the war, preeminent historian of the Pacific theater John Wukovits brings to life the human story of the squadron that bested the Japanese in the Pacific and helped take the war to Tokyo.
