This collection of Sonja Brentjes's articles deals with travels, encounters and the exchange of knowledge in the Mediterranean and Western Asia during the 16th and 17th centuries, focusing on three historiographical concerns. The first is how we should understand the relationship between Christian and Muslim societies, in the period between the translations from Arabic into Latin (10th - 13th centuries) and before the Napoleonic invasion of Ottoman Egypt (1798). The second concern is the "Western" discourse about the decline or even disappearance of the sciences in late medieval and early modern Islamic societies and, third, the construction of Western Asian natures and cultures in Catholic and Protestant books, maps and pictures. The articles discuss institutional and personal relationships, describe how Catholic or Protestant travellers learned about and accessed Muslim scholarly literature, and uncover contradictory modes of reporting, evaluating or eradicating the visited cultures and their knowledge.

For too long, LGBTQ communitiesーincluding Minnesota’sーhave been maligned, misrepresented, and often outright ignored. Myths regarding the queer experience have grown and become embedded in local and national consciousness. The absence of queer stories over time in local historical and popular writing only served to further this ignorance, but great strides have been made in recent decades to celebrate Minnesota’s vibrant queer history. Add to this rising chorus an enchanting new voice: Land of 10,000 Loves, Stewart Van Cleve’s wide-ranging and unprecedented illustrated history of queer life in Minnesota.

Drawing from the renowned Tretter Collection at the University of Minnesotaーa vast collection of books, photographs, films, and other historical artifacts that Van Cleve calls “one of the most comprehensive accounts of international queer history in the world”ーLand of 10,000 Loves blends oral history, archival narrative, newspaper accounts, and fascinating illustrations to paint a remarkable picture of Minnesota’s queer history. More than 120 concise historical essays lead readers from the earliest evidences of queer life in Minnesota before the Second World Warーfor example, Oscar Wilde’s visit to Minnesota and “rumors” at the Alexander Ramsey houseーto riverfront vice districts, protest and parade sites, bars, 1970s collectives, institutions, public spaces, and private homes. More than 130 illustrations illuminate these histories with images of pride guides, archival photographs, and advertisements from local queer bars among other extraordinary pieces of ephemera and artifacts. Many of the stories and images are well known, while others have been all but forgotten, until now.

Building on foundational works of regional queer history such as The Evening Crowd at Kirmser’s and Queer Twin Cities, the historical vignettes of Land of 10,000 Loves show us that Minnesotaーfrom its biggest cities to its smallest townsーhas been, as Van Cleve notes, “queer, to a certain extent, since the very beginning.” Land of 10,000 Loves honors this rich and diverse legacy and is a compelling testament to the sacrifices, scandals, and victories that have affected and continue to affect the lives of queer Minnesotans.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A nuanced account of the early leaders who shaped the American presidency The founding fathers of the United States created a unique institution, the presidency, as they were determined to authorize an effective chief executive but wary of monarchy. They endowed this office with broad prerogatives and power but hedged it in with limitations. The presidency that developed over the next generation, however, was fashioned less by the clauses in the Constitution than by the way that the first presidents responded to challenges such as sectional enmity and the vexing Napoleonic warfare that jeopardized maritime rights. Patriot Presidents explores how the presidency took shape from the medley of clauses handed down to George Washington, who said, "I walk on untrodden ground," for virtually everything he did created a precedent. It then follows the overwhelming challenges faced by his successors, from the austere John Adams who spoke passionately in favor of a strong executive, to Thomas Jefferson, a zealous advocate of American liberties, to James Madison, the creator of the first political party, and James Monroe, whose Monroe Doctrine protected the sovereignty of the Western Hemisphere. It concludes with John Quincy Adams, who could be called the prophet of the expansive twentieth-century state of the Square Deal, the New Deal, the Fair Deal, and the Great Society. The esteemed American historian William E. Leuchtenburg invites readers to revisit the years after the birth of the republic, when Americans could take pride in leaders of ideals, high competence, and integrity who headed their government--chief executives who, though not unflawed, had an abiding commitment to the success of the vulnerable government that had emerged from the revolutionary cause to which they had devoted themselves.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The founder of Seaside Shadows Haunted History Tours sheds light on the supernatural stories of the Constitution State.

Bloody battlefields and raucous taverns in Connecticut served as the backdrop for pivotal figures and bold actions vital to the American Revolution. Nathan Hale is said to still conduct lessons in New London and East Haddam, and many suspect that George Washington occasionally visits the Shaw Mansion and Fairfield's Sun Tavern.
In The Little Religions of Paris, Jules Bois offers a captivating exploration of the lesser-known spiritual practices and faiths that thrive in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Far beyond the well-established religious institutions, Bois delves into the eclectic and often hidden world of Parisian "minor" religionsーthose that, though small in number, contribute to the rich cultural and spiritual landscape of the city.

Bois presents an array of unique belief systems, from mystical cults to occult societies, drawing on interviews, firsthand accounts, and historical research to reveal the diverse range of spiritual expressions that flourish in Paris. Whether examining obscure sects, fringe philosophical movements, or the more esoteric practices that have taken root in the city, Bois sheds light on the ways in which these “little religions” have shaped and reflected the broader social and political currents of Parisian life.

A fascinating study of the margins of spirituality, The Little Religions of Paris offers a window into the hidden corners of a city known for its intellectual, artistic, and philosophical ferment. It is an essential read for anyone intrigued by religious diversity, urban spiritual movements, or the ways in which smaller, alternative belief systems engage with larger societal forces.

Jules Bois (1860?1943) was a French author, philosopher, and occultist known for his pioneering works on mysticism, the occult, and religious studies. An influential figure in the spiritual movements of his time, Bois explored the intersections of science, mysticism, and metaphysical thought. His writings, such as The Occult and the Supernatural and The Philosophy of Mysticism, delved into the hidden dimensions of human experience, offering profound insights into the nature of the soul, the afterlife, and the unseen forces that shape our reality. Bois was deeply engaged with contemporary spiritual currents, drawing inspiration from Kabbalah, Theosophy, and early 20th-century metaphysical ideas. His work continues to inspire scholars, seekers, and those drawn to the mystical traditions of the West.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
