Synonyme Bezeichnungen wie Public Journalism oder Community Journalism zeigen weitere Grundideen. Die Medien und im besonderen die Presse arbeitet mit und f?r die ?ffentlichkeit und die Gemeinschaft der B?rger. Doch ist Journalismus nicht immer an seine Rezipienten und damit in einer Demokratie wie in den USA an die B?rger gerichtet? So sollte es im Idealfall der Presse - und Medienarbeit sein, allerdings hat sich diese urspr?ngliche Rollenverteilung heute sichtlich verschoben. Aus dem ,,watch dog' ist vielfach ein ,,attack dog' geworden, Medien, die sich ?ber Skandal- und Sensationsberichte profilieren, ohne dabei hinterfragen, ob dies unbedingt den Menschen bei der Bew?ltigung ihrer Aufgaben als B?rger hilft. Wenn man als Leser oder Fernsehzuschauer ?ber die beiden extremsten Gegenpositionen hinsichtlich eines Themas oder Ereignisses informiert wird, so ist diese bipolare Berichterstattung in den wenigsten F?llen geeignet, sich eine realisierbare und ausgewogene Meinung zu einem Themas zu bilden. Bildlich gesprochen sind die zumeist vorgestellten Seiten (schwarz und wei?) zu radikal, um die Mehrheit der Menschen zu ?berzeugen. Die konsensausgerichteten Zwischenmeinungen, (die Graut?ne), werden selten beleuchtet. Begr?ndung - wo liegt deren aufsehenerregender Konflikt- und damit Nachrichtenwert? Ein Anliegen des Civic Journalism ist es, genau diese Zwischent?ne mit einzubeziehen, in der Auffassung der ,,Public Journalists' hat ein Thema nicht nur zwei Seiten sondern meist noch mindestens eine mehr. Und der Rezipient hat ein Recht darauf, auch davon zu erfahren, um sich seine Meinung, die konstituierend f?r eine funktionierende Demokratie ist, bilden zu k?nnen. Das Ziel der folgenden Arbeit ist die kritische Betrachtung, inwieweit die Bewegung des Civic Journalism dieser selbstgesetzten Aufgabe gerecht wird, welche Mittel eingesetzt werden und mit welchem Erfolg.
