Dezember 800 wurde ihm in Rom durch Papst Leo III. die Kaiserw?rde des r?mischen Reiches verliehen. Mit dieser Kr?nung entstand das mittelalterliche Kaisertum, das bis ins Jahr 1806 fortbestehen sollte. Dieses geschichtlich wichtige Ereignis ist allerdings umstritten. Einigen Quellen zufolge, stellt sich die Kaiserkr?nung als ein Akt der Dankbarkeit von Papst Leo III. dar, der von seinen Widersachern in Rom verfolgt wurde. Damit einhergehend sind die Meinungen, dass Karl der Gro?e von der Kr?nung v?llig ?berrascht gewesen sei und niemals nach der kaiserlichen Macht gestrebt habe.
