The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics The Personalities, Elections, and Events That Shaped Modern North Carolina【電子書籍】[ Rob Christensen ]

How can a state be represented by Jesse Helms and John Edwards at the same time? Journalist Rob Christensen answers that question and navigates a century of political history in North Carolina, one of the most politically vibrant and competitive southern states, where neither conservatives nor liberals, Democrats nor Republicans, have been able to rest easy. It is this climate of competition and challenge, Christensen argues, that enabled North Carolina to rise from poverty in the nineteenth century to become a leader in research, education, and banking in the twentieth.

In this new paperback edition, Christensen provides updated coverage of recent changes in North Carolina’s political landscape, including the scandals surrounding John Edwards and Mike Easley, the defeat of U.S. senator Elizabeth Dole, the election of the state’s first woman governor, and voters' approval of an African American candidate for president. The book provides an overview of the run-up to the 2010 elections and explains how North Carolina has become, arguably, the most politically competitive state in the South.

In every life, there comes a time when nothing, including God, seems to make sense. There are times when we figuratively find ourselves hanging from a fifteen thousand-foot cliff by one slender rope, completely out of options. We call out to God for rescue, and His answer is to cut the rope. Or worse yet, God Himself may appear to cut the rope for us. What do we do and where do we turn when the life we had imagined disintegrates before our eyes? Who do we blame? Is the comfortable, happy life that we have come to expect a lie? Confronting his youngest daughters diagnosis of pediatric bone cancer, as well as his own struggle with cancer left John Wood questioning a seemingly invisible God. Encounter the journey and discover where Wood eventually landed following his sojourn in the valley of the shadow of death.

Losing the Love of Your Life How God Walks with Us【電子書籍】[ Betty Yoes Richardson ](3)

"Daddy taught us how to die." -Darren Happiness and laughter surrounded him throughout his life, even as his path darkened with unrelenting cancer that slowly took his life; however, his story would not be of defeat for even sickness could not change who he was. Kind and loved beyond measure, he brought a steadiness to a world that wavers in doubt, stress, and whys. These pages will witness God's presence in good times and times of deep need and longing. They will speak to those that love, are loved, hope for love, and especially to those living loveless about the gambit of everyday joy, sorrow, and hope through his and his family's ordinary lives. After a shared lifelong love affair with this caring husband, their final journey together ended with this author in despair. Questions flowed, not from lack of faith; they flowed from the fragility of a broken heart. She soon discovered that the old saying is true: "You better watch what you ask for." Bombarding heaven's gate with, "God, why do you give us such deep love when one day we have to say goodbye?" and "Where does that love go?" and "God, where are you in our despair?" and "God, what are we to do?" and many other questions, the answers sometimes arrived gently and quietly, as well as in incredible, even overwhelming ways. The blessings of decades of love, the parting and crushing grief with endless seeking of healing, and especially revelations from our Lord have been told in these pages through the life of a husband, father, and grandfather named Terry, who lives forever with God and in many hearts. Terry found "the Way" to real life. Yes, he showed us how to die, but most importantly, he showed us how to live!
New Canadian Library The Ross-McClelland Years, 1952-1978【電子書籍】[ Janet Friskney ](3)

In the mid-1950s, much Canadian literature was out of print, making it relatively inaccessible to readers, including those studying the subject in schools and universities. When English professor Malcolm Ross approached Toronto publisher Jack McClelland in 1952 to propose a Canadian literary reprint series, it was still the accepted wisdom among publishers that Canadian literature was of insufficient interest to the educational market to merit any great publishing risks. Eventually convinced by Ross that a latent market for Canadian literary reprints did indeed exist, McClelland & Stewart launched the New Canadian Library (NCL) series in 1958, with Ross as its general editor. In 2008, the NCL will celebrate a half-century of publication.

In New Canadian Library, Janet B. Friskney takes the reader through the early history of the NCL series, focusing on the period up to 1978 when Malcolm Ross retired as general editor. A wealth of archival resources, published reviews, and the NCL volumes themselves are used to survey the working relationship between Ross and McClelland, as well as the collaborative participation of those who, through the middle decades of the twentieth century, were committed to studying and nurturing Canada's literary heritage. To place the New Canadian Library in its proper historical context, Friskney examines the simultaneous development of Canadian literary studies as a legitimate area of research and teaching in academe and acknowledges the NCL as a milestone in Canadian publishing history.

The Silent Watchers England's Navy during the Great War: What It Is, and What We Owe to It【電子書籍】[ Bennet Copplestone ](3)

In "The Silent Watchers," Bennet Copplestone crafts a haunting narrative that deftly intertwines themes of solitude, observation, and the existential fears that plague humanity. Set against a backdrop of a secluded English village, the prose reflects an impressionistic style, rich in lyrical imagery and evocative descriptions, which immerses the reader in a world where silence reigns, and unseen forces subtly manipulate the characters'?? fates. Copplestone's novel stands in stark contrast to the noise of modern life, exploring how isolation can lead to profound self-discovery or descent into madness, echoing the works of authors like Virginia Woolf and Franz Kafka, with its introspective depth and psychological acuity. Bennet Copplestone, a scholar of philosophy with a keen interest in metaphysical literature, draws from his own experiences of solitude and introspection to authentically capture the human psyche's complexities. His academic background informs the philosophical underpinnings of the work, allowing him to delve into the deeper questions surrounding existence and the nature of perception. Growing up in remote settings, Copplestone's familiarity with the silence of nature informs his characters'?? journeys as they engage with their own silent watchers'??their thoughts, regrets, and dreams. This novel is a compelling read for anyone who appreciates literary fiction that challenges the boundaries of self and society. "The Silent Watchers" invites readers into a contemplative realm where they can reflect on their own paths and the unseen forces that guide them, making it a profound addition to contemporary literature.

The central thesis of this book is that the most urgent thing in our generation is the emergence, in the Church, of men and women who know God and serve Him from this knowledge.

The author, Z.T. Fomum, boldly argues that anything a man can do for God is of no consequence if it is not done as an overflow of his knowledge of God.

An initial encounter is important, but beyond that, it takes

spiritual knowledge,

a high frequency,

intensity, and

a long duration

of encounters between a man and his God.

This book is a pertinent plea that no one should serve God without knowing Him.

It's highly recommended.
