He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money, known as indulgences. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517, one of the most important writings of all time. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the emperor. To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation (German: An den christlichen Adel deutscher Nation) is the first of three tracts written by Martin Luther in 1520. In this work, he defined for the first time the signature doctrines of the Priesthood of all believers and the two kingdoms. In it he attacked what he regarded as the "three walls of the Romanists": (1) that secular authority has no jurisdiction over them; (2) that only the pope is able to explain Scripture; (3) that nobody but the Pope himself can call a general church council. Through a description of Luthers letter, this article will describe the impact and historical problems that were caused by Luthers call for a transfer of governing power over the secular sphere to the temporal authorities. Die Wahl des Sachsenherzogs markiert jedoch den H?hepunkt einer krisenhaften Peri-ode, die das Reich seit dem Beginn des Investiturstreits zwischen Kaiser Heinrich IV. und Papst Gregor VII. durchschritt. Aus diesem Grund erscheint es notwendig, die komplizierten Vorg?nge des Investiturstreits und die Herrschaft der beiden daran betei-ligten K?nige Heinrich IV. und Heinrich V. zu betrachten. Fast jeder Herrscher versuchte, seine Nachfolge schon fr?h zu sichern. Doch welche Rolle spielten die F?rsten dabei? Die Beteiligung der Gro?en des Reiches ist nachweisbar. Wir werden der Frage nach-gehen, ob sie eher als Statisten fungierten, die dem Wunsch des K?nigs ohne Einw?nde zustimmten, oder ob sie gemeinsam mit dem amtierenden Herrscher ?ber die Nachfol-geentscheidung verhandelten. Nach dem Tod des letzten kinderlosen Saliers fand 1125 die Wahl Lothars III. statt, ?ber die wir durch die 'Narratio de electione Lotharii Saxoniae ducis in regem Roma-norum' ausf?hrlich unterrichtet sind. Daher widmen wir uns im Folgenden der allge-meinen Quellenlage zur Wahl von 1125 und der Narratio im Besonderen. Die Beschreibung der im V.
